Does the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pay for a Veteran’s Funeral?

Many veterans are unaware of the exact burial benefits provided by the VA, leading to common misconceptions. Unfortunately, most service members don’t receive a clear explanation of their eligibility during their time in the Armed Forces.

As a result, many veterans make plans based on incorrect assumptions, leaving their families unprepared during an already challenging time. These misunderstandings can add unnecessary stress, worry, and financial burden to loved ones during their moment of grief.

Understanding the facts about VA burial benefits is essential to ensure proper planning and peace of mind for you and your family.

WHAT WILL THE VA PAY?

➡️ If the death occurs while hospitalized by the VA, it will pay a $893 burial allowance and $893 for a burial plot

➡️ If the death is service-connected, the VA will pay a burial allowance of up to $2,000 and may reimburse some transportation costs of remains

➡️ For an indigent veteran with no next of kin, the VA will furnish either a casket or cremation urn for interment in either a national, state or tribal veterans cemetery.

➡️ The Social Security Administration also will pay a death benefit of $255.

This ensures your family is prepared for any unexpected costs.
